How to Choose Reed Switch Sensitivity and AT Range
Time:2026-09-10 08:40:40

Reed switch sensitivity is commonly specified as an ampere-turn range under defined test conditions. It helps compare the magnetic field required to operate the contacts, but it is not a direct installation-distance value.

What the AT range indicates

A lower operate AT value generally indicates that less magnetic field is required under the specified test method. The exact relationship between AT and operating distance depends on the magnet and mechanical arrangement.

Consider the magnet

Magnet material, size, pole orientation and temperature affect the available field. Two magnets of similar dimensions can produce different operating behavior.

Include installation tolerance

Account for variation in magnet position, switch position, enclosure thickness and movement. The design should provide reliable operation across the full production tolerance, not only in one prototype.

Check operate and release points

The contact operates and releases at different magnetic-field levels. This hysteresis influences repeatability and prevents unstable switching near the operating point.

Verify the electrical load

Sensitivity does not determine contact capacity. Switching voltage, current, power, load type and expected life must also match the circuit.
