Limit switches detect the physical position or movement of machine components. Reliable selection depends on how the target contacts the actuator, the electrical load and the operating environment.
Roller levers are useful when a moving target passes across the switch. Plunger types suit direct linear contact. Adjustable levers can help accommodate different approach positions, while specialized heads support particular machine motions.
Confirm the target direction, actuation speed, required pretravel and overtravel. The mechanism should operate positively without receiving excessive impact or remaining compressed beyond its permitted travel.
Review voltage, current, contact configuration and load type. Motor, solenoid and lamp loads may create inrush current that differs from a resistive load with the same steady-state current.
Consider metal or plastic housing, sealing, dust, moisture, oil, temperature and vibration. A waterproof limit switch should be selected using the model-specific protection rating and installation instructions.
Check mounting-hole dimensions, cable or conduit direction, wiring space and maintenance access. Replacement applications also require comparison with the existing switch footprint and actuator position.
