Limit switches and proximity sensors can both detect position, but they use different operating principles. The better choice depends on the target, environment, required feedback and machine design.

Contact versus non-contact detection

A mechanical limit switch requires physical movement of its actuator. A proximity sensor detects a target without direct mechanical contact when the target enters its sensing range.

Target material and detection distance

A limit switch can be operated by many target materials if the target can physically move the actuator. A proximity sensor must be selected for the target material and required sensing distance.

Mechanical feedback

Limit switches provide clear mechanical actuation and are available with roller lever, plunger and other actuator forms. The target path, travel and impact must be controlled to avoid damage.

Switching frequency and wear

Non-contact sensors avoid mechanical contact wear and may suit high-frequency detection. Mechanical limit switches still offer a direct and easily understood position signal in many machines.
