The actuator is the part of a limit switch that receives mechanical movement from the machine. Roller lever and plunger mechanisms suit different target paths and installation conditions.
A roller lever is useful when a cam or moving target passes across the switch. The roller reduces sliding friction, while the lever provides mechanical travel and can accommodate some variation in the target path.
A plunger suits direct linear actuation where the target approaches the switch face. Alignment and travel must be controlled so the target does not apply excessive force.
The actuator must be operated in an approved direction. Side loading, reverse impact or incorrect cam angles can reduce repeatability and service life.
Review pretravel, operating point, overtravel and release movement for the selected model. The machine should provide enough movement for reliable operation without reaching a damaging mechanical stop.
High approach speed, vibration, dust, oil and moisture affect actuator and enclosure selection. Mounting rigidity and target shape also influence repeatability.
